More Than Enough Food: Rethinking Africa’s Food Future

We are pleased to announce the release of Issue VIII of Africa Sustainability Magazine (ASM), More Than Enough Food: Agriculture & Climate Change.

This edition explores a question at the heart of Africa’s development: what will it take to build food systems that are productive, resilient and more firmly under African control?

Africa’s food challenge is often framed as a question of production — how to grow more, feed a growing population and close persistent food gaps. But the realities facing the continent’s farmers and food systems are more complex. Climate change is altering growing conditions and agricultural productivity, while trade, infrastructure, finance, technology and markets all shape who produces food, who captures value and who has access to it.

In More Than Enough Food, we look beyond production to examine the systems surrounding Africa’s agriculture and food economy, and what food security and food sovereignty mean in a rapidly changing climate.

Highlights from Issue VIII include:

• Securing Africa’s Food Future – our Leaders’ Perspectives brings together senior voices from CGIAR, IITA, EY, the Climate Investment Funds and Sasini to consider how Africa can build food systems that are productive, resilient and capable of adapting to the decades ahead.
• The Climate Crisis Is Redrawing Nigeria’s Agricultural Map – an investigation into how changing climate conditions are affecting where and how agriculture can be practised across Nigeria.
• Africa’s Food System Is Being Shaped by Markets It Does Not Control – an examination of the global and regional trade dynamics influencing Africa’s food systems, from import dependence and fertiliser markets to the opportunities presented by AfCFTA.
• The New Trade Wars Are Reshaping Africa’s Food System – exploring how geopolitical tensions, trade disruptions and changing global markets are creating new pressures and choices for African agriculture.
• Africa Does Not Necessarily Need to Produce More Food. It Needs to Lose Less. – a look at food loss and the opportunity to strengthen Africa’s food systems by addressing what happens between production and consumption.
• What Nigeria’s Food Policies Reveal About the Harder Work of Building Local Industry – an examination of the relationship between food policy, local production and the development of stronger domestic agricultural value chains.
• SDG 2 in Africa: Five Years to Turn the Numbers Around – a review of Africa’s progress towards ending hunger, improving food security and advancing sustainable agriculture ahead of the 2030 deadline.

The issue also features an Earthshot Prize 2026 editorial, highlighting this year’s solutions addressing some of the world’s most pressing environmental challenges, including African finalists AirQo from Uganda and Pula from Kenya.

Taken together, the contributions in Issue VIII point to a broader understanding of Africa’s food future. Food security is not simply about producing enough. It is also about resilience, markets, infrastructure, investment, technology, livelihoods and the ability of African countries to capture more value from their own food systems.

By bringing together researchers, business leaders, investors, development practitioners, farmers, innovators and policy voices, Issue VIII continues ASM’s mission to translate the research, ideas and experiences shaping sustainable development across Africa into informed public conversation.
